French solo skipper Yoann Richomme laid down a marker ahead of next year’s Vendee Globe with a superb win in the Retour à La Base transatlantic race from the Carribean island of Martinique to Lorient, France – his first IMOCA race win since being named skipper of  Paprec Arkéa.

Richomme – a double winner of the Solitaire du Figaro and the 2018 and the 2022 Route du Rhum in the Class 40 division – completed the 3,500-mile theoretical course in nine days three minutes and 48 seconds, at an average speed of 16.19 knots (on the great circle route). Under his northern option, he covered 4,256.68 miles at an average speed of 19.70 knots.

A little under six hours later, second into Lorient was fellow Frenchman Jérémie Beyou on Charal, followed a little under two hours later by Briton Sam Goodchild who claimed his fourth consecutive IMOCA third place finish on For the Planet.
