The Route du Rhum and wider yacht racing community are in mourning today after the death in Guadeloupe of two employees of OC Sport Pen Duick, the company who organises the Route du Rhum solo transatlantic race, when a motor boat they were on capsized during the finish of the first boat home – Charles Caudrelier’s Ultim Maxi Edmond de Rothschild.

No details of the incident have been released other than that the boat had 11 people on board when it overturned.

The French maxi trimaran crossed the line shortly after 0500 this morning local time – roughly an hour before sunrise in Guadeloupe.

“All our thoughts go out to the families of our two employees and to all of the profoundly affected members of our teams,” said Hervé Favre, President of OC Sport Pen Duick.
