My Review of Gill’s OS3 Coastal Sailing Jacket

Gill’s latest series of coastal sailing jackets and trousers offers both men’s and women’s options, blending sleek, modern aesthetics with functionality designed to withstand harsh weather conditions. These pieces are replete with smart features aimed at ensuring dryness and comfort during foul weather.

In my decades-long experience in yachting, I’ve found Gill’s foul-weather gear to surpass even pricier alternatives from brands like Henri Lloyd and Helly Hansen in terms of comfort and protection on deck.

The jacket along with the OS3 trousers (a standout in this series), boast a waterproof yet breathable fabric that’s built to last.

It includes safety-oriented design elements such as a highly visible, adjustable hood, reflective accents on pocket piping, and conspicuous zippers. Additionally, the wrists feature retro-reflective patches to enhance visibility and safety in the water.

These jackets aren’t just for sailing; they’re equally suitable for powerboating, saltwater fishing, and other marine activities.

Gill employs its patented XPLORE Fabric Technology in the construction of these jackets. This two-layer system combines a durable, abrasion-resistant outer layer with an innovative Xpel water-repellent treatment and a breathable, waterproof inner coating. This ensures comfort without compromising on dryness or warmth, facilitated by a fully lined interior for easy wear.

The jacket’s front closure features a YKK Aquaguard zipper, designed without metal to avoid corrosion, and is complemented by a storm guard for enhanced water resistance. This dual protection strategy ensures that any water entering the jacket is effectively channeled out.

For practicality, the jacket includes large hand pockets with a secure hook and loop closure and a fleece lining for warmth. An internal zipped pocket safeguards personal items like mobile phones, and a unique mesh section at the back allows the jacket to self-drain, offering additional safety if one falls overboard.

Through thoughtful design and innovative materials, Gill’s latest sailing gear sets a new standard for performance and safety in marine apparel.
