
When it comes to one-design owner/driver circuits it’s a struggle to think of one more demanding than the 44 Cup.
RC44’s are supremely evenly-matched boats and notoriously challenging to sail well and with a fleet populated with some of the top names in professional yacht racing the margin between success and failure is paper thin.
All of which must make Dutchman Nico Poons’ world championship victory aboard Charisma this weekend taste all the sweeter. Although after many years in the class this is the team’s first world title, it is also their third consecutive event win this season and it sees them top the overall leaderboard with just the concluding regatta in Muscat, Oman this December left to race.
